Our students and staff will learn and live the Word of God through worship, witness, and service.

F.4 Provide formation opportunities for students and staff that further their participation in our faith and enable them to discern the presence of God in their lives.
Actions we will take
Our charism is "Faith, culture and education in a community where we encourage, nurture, listen to and embrace the family...promoting healthy relationships through Indigenous culture and strength-focused learning." Through communication over time, we know that our students, staff, and families would like to focus on connection, celebrating student strengths and building healthy relationships with each other, working to fulfill our Creator's dream of gathering all people. Throughout the day and week, we will begin our conversations, with students and adults, with a positive comment, story, or recollection before we continue on. We will celebrate our faith and culture in Monday and Friday morning whole school gatherings as well as daily smudging of the school. In supporting our students through challenging situations, we will connect with them through restorative practice and circles (What happened? What is important in our school? Was anyone harmed? How can we promote healing for all?). In a welcoming way, our staff will communicate openly and effectively with our parent community to connect us as we know that listening and embracing our families as partners will enhance the learning or our students.

Actions we will take
At Ben Calf Robe, we pride ourselves in meeting the diverse needs of all of our students. We know that when our students learn to read well, each of them has an easier time learning in our school and in transitioning to high school. As a school staff, it is our commitment to continuously learn, refining the strategies in our instructional repertoire, to understand where each student is in their learning to be able to choose the best next steps for them. Our school is a part of our division's Indigenous Reading Program which gives our students, in kindergarten through grade 9, more speech/language and reading intervention (phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension) opportunities and support. At the start of the year, with the support of our division reading consultants, staff will review the five pillars of literacy and intentionally plan how these will be woven into daily teaching structures and routines. Our grade 1 and 2 teachers will continue with phonemic awareness and phonics daily lessons and our teachers in other grades will schedule intentional reading instruction each day amidst curriculum and content area study, with a literacy block as a forum for that work. Teachers in all grades will administer reading screeners, on word recognition, fluency, and comprehension, in October, February, and June to show student progress and success in reading achievement.

Actions we will take
As our school is a Cree Language and Culture school that welcomes Indigenous students from all over the city of Edmonton, it is important that all staff continue to grow in our skills and maintain a shared understanding of Indigenous culture, engaging in practices to facilitate reconciliation. Our many Indigenous staff will share their knowledge and understanding with our students in many ways; through Cree language and culture teaching throughout the week, Cree language student morning messages on the intercom, daily smudging of our school led by our cultural instructors and new students each day, Monday and Friday morning assemblies with Cree prayers, singing and drumming, and invitation to and participation in traditional ceremonies. Through daily dialogue as well as weekly gatherings, our school staff will continue to develop in our ability to recognize, respect, and celebrate the histories, cultures, languages, contributions, perspectives and experiences of our Indigenous peoples.

Actions we will take
Ben Calf Robe school takes pride in our many collaborations that support student success and parent involvement. Our school benefits from many relationships and partnerships with the greater community, locally, provincially, and federally. Our staff will engage with our partners with positivity, responding promptly, with our applications and reports, and with gratitude to these offerings and opportunities for our students. Our staff will consider how these community relationships and partnerships can support each of our students in their continued learning progress and success and implement flexible actions as we live out the purpose of each partnership. Our school community will organize a partner/volunteer appreciation event in the spring.

November Review:
The Ben Calf Robe school community has taken a holistic approach to optimal learning through collaboration and good stewardship by contributing learning and living the Word of God through worship, witness and service. As a school community we have provided faith formation opportunities by connecting with Father Glenn in weekly services either virtually or in person. Father Glenn is included in our liturgical celebrations to walk and live the Word of God with our school community. We continue to promote healthy relationships with those we serve by: clothing drives, community food hamper drives, restorative practice and circles with students, staff and families. The school team has facilitated a sense of belonging by welcoming students at various stages of readiness. This has been completed through school-home connections, home visits, hamper deliveries, medical appointment support and community connections with outside partners as a whole. The students and teachers have been making steady gains in readiness to learn; developing to the students full potential. Our Ben Calf Robe school team is collaborating effectively with Curriculum Consultants, Inclusive Consultants, as well as the Indigenous Reading Team to ensure that differentiation, best practices and student achievement are occurring. Teachers are applying assessment data collected in September and October to support diverse needs through accessing district approved resources, flexible programming, attending professional development opportunities that are focused on literacy and numeracy as well as taking a cross curricular approach. Ben Calf Robe staff and students participate in a variety of cultural programming guided by ECSD Council of Elders, BCR Cultural team with a focus on Cree Language, land based teachings, daily smudging, elder visits, drumming and songs. With an increase in student and staff participation, we are able to provide optimal cultural learning for all. Ben Calf Robe school community continues to maintain positive, working relationships within the greater community. Our Ben Calf Robe school community takes pride in honoring good stewardship.
February Review:
At Ben Calf Robe – St. Clare, we continue to strive by offering a holistic approach to optimal learning for our students, staff, and parent community. We gather twice weekly for our virtual assemblies to embrace learning, school activities, Cree Language and Culture through prayer and song. Our Cultural team does a tremendous job of sharing their gifts and talents with the school community, and the students share their love of learning with all. We continue to promote healthy relationships with those we serve through clothing drives, providing food hampers, and collaborating with our sister schools who offer generosity and kindness to us through various donations which we truly appreciate the social justice that occurs. The school team continues to offer the diverse students who come from various stages of readiness a safe, caring, welcoming environment where equality, inclusivity and a sense of belonging is embraced. Throughout the school year many home-school connections have been made by our Family School Liaison Workers and School Resource Officer who continue to work collaboratively with our families providing positive effective working relationships. The students have been granted many in house supports with literacy and numeracy intervention which has been taken as a school wide approach. The students are making gains in readiness to learn working towards their full potential. Having access to individual support, as well as small group instruction, allows for student success schoolwide. In addition to our students making gains, we are now spotlighting student attendance by having a monthly divisional draw for three students who have perfect attendance for the month. The students are excited about the monthly incentive, and we will continue this draw moving forward for the remainder of the school year. Our Ben Calf Robe school community has also been granted additional funding for student assessments, technology, and cultural resources to ensure student success. Our students have also been participating in educational field trips that offer cultural, academic, and physical literacy components. We continue to embrace our faith through virtual liturgical celebrations and are grateful for the classes who have been able to participate in Mass with Father Glenn in person. At Ben Calf Robe-St. Clare, we continue to learn together, work together, and pray together!
